Capturing realism with soap opera

25th November

At our first meeting we did a detailed project plan of what we were going to do in our pre-production stage. This included ideas of storylines, characters and setting we wanted in our soap and when we were going to do the storyboard, writ ethe script and film. At the moment i am very happy with our plan as we know what things we are doing on all the days and i think we have made a good start.

We have decided to take it in turns every week to record our meetings. This is important because when we look back we can see what progress made made on each day.

We set ourselves homework to research storylines, characters, settings and themes and issues in existing soap operas. This gave us ideas of the different things such as characters ans storylines we wanted to include in our soap.

November

Today we looked at our research that we did and wrote a idea mindshower of storylines, characters, themes and issues and setting. I am very pleased with the work we have done today as we are on top of our plan and i am looking forward to the next lesson.

1st December

Today we picked out what storylines, characters, themes and issues and setting we wanted in our soap and started our charcater profiles. This put us ahead of our plan which i am very pleased about. We now exactly what will be in our soap.

3rd December

Today we carried on with our character profiles and wrote back stories for all of them. We chose 5 characters which included 'the rogue' - Danny, 'the tart' - Suzzie, 'the bastard' - Steve, 'the good girl' - Emily, 'the gay boy' - Will and 'the decent husband' - Percy. I am very pleased with our character profiles as they are very clear and detailed and we are on top of our schedule again which is good.

4th December

We started our pitch of our soap 'The Grove' presentation. We made it on powerpoint and we split the themes and issues and the characters and storylines into two different presentations so it would get done quicker which meant that we could put them together as a team. I think this was effective as we had time to add things we missed out which we thought were important, improving the presentation.

8th December

Today we presented our soap pitch, where we explained our soaps in detail about the themes and issues it would deal with, why we chose them, the charcaters and storylines and why they would be relevant in our soap. We achived 12 out of 15 as it was being assessed giving our group a level 3 which i was very happy with.

10th December

Today we started our storyboard of our opening title serquence where we had to decide on different suitable images and music that we thought would fit in with the soap and set the mood and tone of the atmosphere. I think that what we did was good but imporvements could be made to make it even better.

11th December

Today we worked on our script. We decided to arrange what order the characters would be introduced in and how the storylines would fit around each other. We also included stage directions to show exactly what actions we wanted the characters to do. We also wrote a paragraph on why the title sequence would work (how the images, sound fit together)

12th December

Today we evaluated our title sequence and the storyboard. We included how we thought it fitted the soap genre with its images, editing, camera movement and sound and how it would draw the audience in to watch the rest of the soap.

We then went back to the script and carried on working on it. After completing this we started on our presentation about our soap which was in for thursday.

15th December

We presented our soap opera pitch to the class which was recorded. We included what channel we wanted to air our programme on which was channel 4. We then wrote why we wanted it on channel 4 and why the programme would fit with the channel.

Hi Angelina

Welcome to the wonderful world of blogging. This is now going to be an essential part of the diploma and where some of your assessment will be done. It is really important that you use this blog to keep a record of work and of evaluation during the course. I will be using it to keep an eye on you.

The work done so far...

The first brief we were set was to create a capture representing a theme. The theme i chose was happiness and we filmed different images and then made them into a short film. We then manipulated another groups capture to change the theme.

'The Park' Capture Film

We were then introduced to Moving Image Language where we manipulated a fighting scene from the film 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' and added different sound clips to change the mood and atmosphere. This taught me that sound plays a massive part in creating different moods and atmospheres and engages the audience. We also did this for the manipulation of the psycho shower scene to make it into a shower gel advert. We also used captions and transitions to help create a fun, engaging advert.

We then created a vox pop to explain the job roles of a cameraman and other things included with the career e.g. the salary etc. We planned it out my scripting and storyboarding the information and scenes we wanted to include in the vox pop. This helped me understand the importance of planning everything out to make sure it flowed smoothly and well.

Another brief we was given to test out these skills was creating a short section in an arts programme called "Defining British Soap". This also included a thorough plan which included a schedule for researching the information, making the script, producing a storyboard, filming and editing. This was to ensure that we had enough time to plan everything out which was effective as it made the whole job easier and more professional as we knew exactly what we were doing
